What work of art (film, book, record, whatever) changed your life?
Submitted by bodhibound.
My mother says we watched It's A Wonderful Life every Christmas when I was a kid, but when I watched it at 19 it felt like the first time and it completely flipped my lid, making me rethink everything I was doing and wanted to be doing, leading to some drastic changes, not the least of which was my leaving the Jehovah's Witnesses. Haven't watched it in a long while but I'm thinking this weekend might be the right time for a refresher.
What's your musical horoscope? (Put your player on shuffle and write down the first 10 songs that come up.)
A Little of Your Time - Maroon 5
No One - Alicia Keys
Beautiful - Christina Aguilera
This Ain't a Scene, It's An Arms Race - Fall Out Boy
Strobelite Honey - Black Sheep
Say Goodbye - Dave Matthews Band
Over You - Daughtry
Crooked Ass N**** - 2Pac
The Choice is Yours - Black Sheep
Youth of the Nation - P.O.D.
Gonna be a rough day, it seems!
What are your predictions for the World Series?
While I'd like to see the Colorado Rockies over the Boston Red Sox in 5, so they can win it at home, I think it will likely go 6 or 7, but the upstart Rocks will ultimately pull out the victory. Scheduling nonsense aside -- 8:23 pm games in Colorado, in October!?!? -- I think it's going to be an exciting series that not nearly enough people are going to watch. Their loss because the Rockies have several really good players deserving of the national spotlight -- not to mention the always appealing Cinderalla storyline -- and the Red Sox have some great young kids in the mix with their established veterans, each of whom have already had at least one big moment in the playoffs so far.
As much as I enjoy a good football game, there's no better sport than baseball and no better championship than the World Series!
Side note: Why is Dane Cook the centerpiece of Fox's marketing campaign for the playoffs this year? From the little bit I've seen, he's not a terribly funny comedian -- his career seemingly similar to Sarah Silverman's inexplicable "popularity" -- and his commercials pale in comparison to Don Cheadle's great NFL playoffs commercials from a couple of seasons ago.
Led Zeppelin will finally offer their music online starting next month. Of the music you buy, about how much of it do you download and how much do you buy on physical formats (CDs, vinyl, etc.)?
Any artist not making their music available online in some method -- unless they're involved in some label dispute over royalties -- is crazy, I think, and missing out on reaching new audiences. I rarely buy CDs, et al, these days, preferring to selectively download singles that I like and ocassionally getting the full album from favorite artists or newly discovered ones who click for me (ie: Gym Class Heroes and Jurassic 5). I'm a lot more likely to seek out an interesting new-to-me band via a one-shot download than I am to head over to...um, where does one buy music in person these days anyway?
I currently have almost 700 songs on my new MP3 player, with about that many more on the hard drive jukebox Salomé and I share. I have a ton of CDs, mostly from the 90s, that one of these days I'll finish ripping so I can get my digital Milli Vanilli fix whenever I want to, but it's such a time-consuming process. The majority of songs from this century, I bought online.
On that note, it's playlist time featuring the 10 most recent songs I've listened to via "Random Play All":
- All That I Am, Rob Thomas
- How to Save a Life, The Fray
- Words of Wisdom, Tupac
- Lean Back, Terror Squad
- Mad Season, Matchbox Twenty
- Let's Go Crazy, Prince
- Human Nature, Michael Jackson
- El Cuarto de Tula, Buena Vista Social Club
- So Much to Say, Dave Matthews Band
- Ever the Same, Rob Thomas
It's Rob Thomas Day, apparently! Not a bad thing.
What shows are you looking forward to in the new fall TV season?
K-ville and, of course, Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice.
I caught the preview for K-ville on Jet Blue a couple of times last month and it looks really good; a gritty spin on the Miami Vice formula, set in post-Katrina New Orleans. A great setting and an interesting cast -- Anthony Anderson and Cole Hauser are both underrated actors, and someone who looks a lot like Nia Long, though I can't seem to find her or the character (presumably Anderson's wife) credited anywhere...? -- it's the most excited I've been about a new TV show since...well, damn, it's been a while, actually. The first season of Survivor, perhaps?
The only problem is that it's on Mondays, like my dear-departed Boston Public used to be. Back then, before it went downhill (shockingly fast, at that), I was at 13 every Monday and Salomé used to record it for me. Now that I'm back at 13 on a semi-regular basis, along with a couple of other shows of interest on at inconvenient times and both Isaac and India dealing with homework, ensuring no downtime before 10pm on most nights, we've decided to jump into the 21st Century and ordered DVR from Cablevision so we don't have to miss anything.
Theoretically, at least.
We have several stacks of unwatched DVDs going a few years back that we still haven't gotten around to watching, not to mention just as many more we haven't bothered buying because of the backlog. And it doesn't help that on those rare times we get a night out to catch a movie, it's sometimes at awkward times of the year when nothing really good is out. Case in point: a couple of weeks ago we ended up seeing Balls of Fury. Nuff said.
But yeah, K-ville. Can't wait!
What decision changed the course of your life?

December 9, 1996: After much internal debate, getting off the line to exit the parking lot at Jersey City State College, parking my car, and unexpectedly jumping into a classmate's car to clumsily explain to her that, despite having a very good reason to ignore the impulse, with the semester ending in a week or two, I couldn't ignore the feeling that I'd regret not telling her that I was very attracted to her.
I was living with my girlfriend at the time, in the process of moving from Jersey City to Manhattan, but our relationship was in its death throes and I'd been finding it harder and harder to ignore this one girl in one of my classes, especially after she'd written me this great letter in response to my zine, zuzu's petals. She was cool about the intrusion and we went to a diner a few blocks away and talked for about an hour or so over coffee and something just clicked into place. We went for coffee after class again the following week, this time talking for almost three hours, about any and everything, and it was as comfortable as I'd ever been talking to someone, especially sober. A couple of weeks later, on December 27th, we went on our first "date", to dinner and the Nuyorican Poets Café, and the rest is history.
That girl, of course, was Salomé, and nineteen months later we got married, defying my long-held belief that I was destined to be a life-long bachelor, mostly due to a fear of ending up like my father, thrice married with an uncanny ability to disconnect from the past.
Would you go on vacation by yourself, and if so where would you go?
Submitted by Sean & Stefan.
Assuming money's no object, I'd start in New Mexico, rent a real Jeep and spend two weeks driving throughout the Southwest -- NM, Arizona, Texas, down into Mexico -- taking in as many cities and open spaces as I could, never spending more than a night or two in any one place. That's the most beautiful part of the country, I think, and I'd love to just soak it all in with no particular schedule of places to go or things to do, the Incredible Hulk TV show theme song playing in the back of my head each time I move on.
That's a dream vacation, and really could only happen as a solo getaway.
More realistically, I'd take 4 or 5 nights in Austin, TX or Los Angeles or San Francisco, the latter two of which I've spent little (LA) or no (SF) time in but have always wanted to check out. Austin, of course, has always been one of my favorite cities and I'm really looking forward to getting back down there next month, even if it is during the National Poetry Slam and I won't get to see as much of the area as I'd like to. Last time I was there was 2000 or 2001, I think, so I'm long overdue and even if I never get out of the downtown area, I'll be happy to be there.
